Removable appliances: correct use

Removable appliances are very common in orthodontic treatments. As their name suggests, their main feature is that they can come in and out of the mouth during everyday life.

To properly place a removable appliance in your mouth, it is important to consider the following:

  • In the first days, until you get used to the feel of the appliance in your mouth, you can wear it for less hours than those suggested by your orthodontist. Yet, try to wear it as much as you can. The goal is to gradually increase the time you wear it until you reach the amount needed during the day. The more you wear it from the beginning, the faster you will get used to it.
  • Remember: if you feel discomfort, difficulty in speaking or increased production of saliva in your mouth, it is perfectly normal. Try to talk a lot and read aloud until you get used to the feel of the appliance in your mouth. If the discomfort lasts longer than normal, contact your orthodontist.
  • Insert the appliance carefully and with gentle movements, according to the instructions of your orthodontist.
  • Always remove the appliance when eating and brushing your teeth.
  • When removing the appliance, rinse it with water and always place it wet in its box, in a shady and cool place. Otherwise it may get dirty, lost or damaged.
  • If you have to refrain from wearing the appliance for a long time, place it wet in its box and keep it in the refrigerator.
  • Clean the appliance with a soft toothbrush that you only have for this purpose. Put some granular toothpaste or a little dish soap on the toothbrush before brushing.
  • If you want the appliance to look cleaner and shinier, you can occasionally put it in a bowl of vinegar.
  • If your appliance falls down, pick it up immediately. Disinfect it with alcohol and rinse it.
  • In case of corruption or loss of the appliance, contact the orthodontist immediately for an emergency appointment.
