Orthodontist: education and specialization
An orthodontist is a doctor who specializes exclusively in orthodontics, and more specifically in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of problems related to:
- the contact of the upper and lower teeth when we close our mouth (occlusion)
- the movement or the incorrect position of our teeth in the oral cavity
- the relation of the jaws with the rest of the face
- the facilitation of proper facial development (orthopedic treatments)
To obtain his degree and professional license in Greece, an orthodontist first completes a five-year study program of a Dentistry School and obtains a degree in Dental Surgery. Then, he specializes in orthodontics by completing a clinical specialization curriculum of at least three years. Finally, he obtains his internship by participating in the official examinations of the Central Health Council (K.E.S.Y), under the responsibility of the Ministry of Health.
