Removable Retairners
Removable Retainers

Apart from permanent retainers maintenance of the therapeutic effect can also be done with flexible removable retainers, i.e. objects that the patient can place and remove from his/her mouth during the day.
These come in the form of a removable appliance that the patient is asked to wear in his sleep and in some cases in his/her daily activities. They come in two types. The first type is made of almost invisible thermoplastic and is known as “Essix retainer”. The second type is made of acrylic framed with retaining wires and is known as “Hawley retainer”. Both types are individualized, i.e. they are made exclusively for the needs of each patient.
The main advantages of removable retainers are their flexibility. At the same time, however, self-discipline and consistency are required from the patient, since if he/she avoids wearing the appliance there is a serious risk of attenuation of the therapeutic effect.
How long should we use these retainers? The answer to this question is unique to each patient and is defined by the orthodontist.
Removable retainers: what to watch out for:
- Store the retainer exclusively in the case with which you received it.
- Carefully place and remove the retainer from the mouth with your hands.
- Do not wear the retainer while brushing your teeth or eating. You may need to avoid using it in other circumstances as well, if our orthodontist suggests it.
- Retainers wear out over time. Therefore, it is necessary to arrange an appointment with our orthodontist for the necessary check of the retainer.
- Be careful not to lose the retainer. It is easy to do so because of its transparency.
- Clean the retainer daily with a toothbrush and plenty of water.
