Μany of us believe that orthodontics is something that only has to do with children and teenagers. Nonetheless, in recent years more and more adults are crossing our door ready for a treatment with a functional or aesthetic scope.
The main reasons that lead an adult to orthodontic treatment are:
- The restoration of a problem not solved in childhood or adolescence.
- Improving the patient’s smile.
- Preparation for a dental surgery, which will be done by a dentist (supportive treatment).
- The recurrence of an orthodontic problem after an older treatment.
An adult orthodontic treatment usually lasts 18-24 months and may include any of the following:
Fixed appliances: metal braces
Metal braces are the orthodontic appliances known to most of us. They are effective in almost all orthodontic problems. They are made of titanium and stainless steel.
The therapeutic effect of metal braces comes through the constant and gentle pressure that they exert on the teeth until moved to their correct position. The pressure is exerted with special brackets that are attached to the teeth. The brackets are joined with orthodontic wire stabilized with elastic or metal ligatures. The technology available today allows these components to be smaller than ever, reducing any aesthetic problems.
Despite being quite distinguishable, metal braces have many advantages. Above all, they are durable and effective.
Fixed appliances: ceramic braces
Ceramic, transparent braces have the same therapeutic effect as metal ones, but with much more discreet aesthetics. This factor is very important, especially in adults, since in the past many avoided treatment for aesthetic reasons.
These braces are made of aluminum, zirconium or porcelain and match the color of the teeth. The placement and removal from the teeth is done as in the metal braces.
Depending on the nature of the orthodontic problem and other functional or occlusive factors, the orthodontist suggests the choice of metal or ceramic hooks, in order to provide the best possible therapeutic effect.

Orthodontics for adults: advantages
It is never too late to provide ourselves with the benefits of an orthodontic treatment! With such a treatment you gain:
- Improved hygiene. Aligned teeth are easier to brush and reduce the possibility of food being trapped between them. This in turn reduces the risk of developing a possible periodontal disease in the long run.
- Easier prosthetic or other therapies carried out by a dentist.
- Harmonious relation of the teeth with each other. This results in better speech, chewing, swallowing and breathing.
- Proper occlusion, i.e. contact of the upper and lower teeth when you close your mouth.
- Increased self-confidence in your social and personal relationships.
